The on-board battery is the central point of the electrical system

The on-board battery, also the second battery , is the center of vehicle electrics in the motorhome or camper. Are common for AGM batteries, but also gel batteries or high-quality lithium batteries qualify.

All consumers are protected by fuses and supplied with 12 volts from the battery. The battery also serves as storage and provides the corresponding power. Battery sizes of around 100 Ah are sufficient for most camper applications. Such a battery would be able to supply a compressor cooler with electricity for about 2 days. With a voltage converter , household devices with 230 volts can be operated via the on- board battery .

How is the battery charged?

There are several ways of recharging the battery with electricity. Charging while driving: The alternator's current also charges the 2nd battery. To do this, an isolating relay must be installed. Charging with 230 volts: if the motorhome is connected to "shore power", it can be charged with a special charger that turns 230V into 12V. Charging with solar: A solar system on the vehicle roof always charges when the sun is shining. This ecological method is often used when camping because it is maintenance-free and efficient. Other charging options: There are other devices that can charge the battery, such as a fuel cell or a power generator .
